Can AI write product descriptions for my online store?
Yes. An AI product description generator can turn a product title and two or three features into complete, ready-to-paste copy in seconds, and on Shopify that generator is built into the admin and free on every plan. What AI does not do is know whether what it wrote is true, so the draft is finished and the checking is yours.
Tools that work
If you want an AI product description generator that sits where you already work, three options cover almost every small store. Plans, limits and prices can change, so check the current plan on the tool's site before paying for anything.
Shopify Magic is the obvious first stop if your store is on Shopify. It is a suite of free AI-powered features integrated across Shopify's products and workflows, available for free regardless of your subscription plan (Shopify Help Center). To generate a description: go to Products, open a product, click the Generate text icon in the description toolbar, then enter and submit a prompt. Shopify recommends giving it a product title and at least two product features or keyword items, and says you can specify tone or writing style in the prompt. Write the prompt in any language Shopify supports and the output matches that language. Shopify also states it does not use one merchant's store-level data to power Shopify Magic for other merchants (Shopify Help Center).
ChatGPT is the general option. Its Free plan includes unlimited text chats, with limited messages with uploads, limited image creation, limited voice, limited deep research and limited memory; paid individual tiers are Go, Plus and Pro (OpenAI). Plus costs USD 20 per month, billed monthly, with no annual billing option, and OpenAI notes model availability and limits change over time (OpenAI Help Center). Go is the low-cost tier with higher limits than Free for image generation, file uploads and data analysis; the Go price was not shown on the pricing page when checked, so treat it as unconfirmed.
Claude is a reasonable alternative if you already use it. The Free plan is $0 and includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation and code execution, memory and Artifacts; Pro is $17 per month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 if billed monthly, adding more usage, Projects, more models and research. Prices exclude tax and plans may change (Anthropic).
For writing short product copy, the free tiers are usually enough — you are generating text, not uploading large files. Paid plans mainly buy you higher limits.
A prompt to paste
Paste this into Shopify Magic, ChatGPT's product description workflow, or Claude, and replace the bracketed parts:
Write a product description for an online store.
Product title: [product title]
Key features (at least two): [feature 1], [feature 2], [feature 3]
Who it is for: [target buyer]
Tone: [e.g. plain and practical]
Length: [e.g. 80 words]
Rules:
- Open with the main benefit, not the brand name.
- Turn every feature into what the buyer gets from it.
- Do not invent materials, dimensions, certifications, country of origin, health benefits or guarantees.
- If a detail is not listed above, leave it out and write [needs checking] instead.
- Do not use hype words or superlatives unless the detail above supports them.
Two follow-ups worth running:
Rewrite this in a [formal / friendly / technical] tone, same facts, no new claims.
Shorten this to two sentences for the product card, keeping only the top benefit and one feature.
How far AI gets you
AI does it. The drafting step is fully handled: give a title plus two features and you get back complete prose in the tone and language you asked for, with no research or writing left for you. This is not a case of AI assisting with halves of sentences — the copy arrives finished.
What you still do
The draft is done; the truth of it is not. What you keep:
- Read it before you publish. Shopify says you are responsible for the accuracy of all the content you publish to your store, even when you use automatic text generation to create it (Shopify Help Center).
- Check every claim against your own records. Under Australian consumer law guidance, any information or claim a business provides about its products must be accurate, truthful and based on reasonable grounds, and the rule applies to every channel including websites, product packaging, social media, quotations and testimonials (ACCC).
- Be careful with origin and material claims. It is illegal in Australia to make false or misleading claims about a product's country or place of origin, and the ACCC notes it makes no difference whether a business intended to mislead — a statement that creates a false impression can still be unlawful (ACCC).
- Keep your evidence. In the US, the FTC's small-business guidance says advertising must be truthful and non-deceptive and advertisers must have evidence to back up their claims (FTC).
- Assume the model can be wrong. OpenAI says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading outputs, including fabricated quotes or citations, and advises verifying important information (OpenAI Help Center). Anthropic similarly says users should not rely on Claude as a singular source of truth (Claude Help Center).
- Control your data if you paste anything sensitive. In ChatGPT you can stop new conversations being used to train OpenAI models by turning off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings > Data controls; chats still stay in your history, and temporary chats are not used to improve models (OpenAI Help Center).
Go to an official source or a qualified person when a description touches regulated claims — country of origin, therapeutic or health claims, safety standards, warranties, or anything where a regulator sets the wording. Take the ACCC and FTC guidance as the rule, and ask a lawyer or a licensed professional if you are unsure how it applies to your product.
Common questions
Do I need a paid plan to generate descriptions?
Usually no. Shopify Magic is free on every Shopify subscription plan, and both ChatGPT and Claude offer free plans that can write text (Shopify Help Center, OpenAI). Paid tiers buy higher limits, not better judgement about your product.
Can I use a ChatGPT product description on a non-Shopify store?
Yes. Generate the text wherever you like and paste it into your store's product field; nothing about the output is tied to Shopify.
Can AI write claims like "made in Australia" or "organic"?
It can write the words, which is the problem. Only publish a claim you can substantiate from your own supplier or certification records, since origin claims are specifically called out as unlawful when false or misleading in Australia (ACCC).
