Yes. An AI flashcard maker can read the notes you already have and hand back finished flashcards and practice questions in one pass; that work is done for you, not drafted for you to write. The catch is small but real: the same tools warn they can get things wrong, so you check the cards against your notes before you start memorising them.

Tools that work

Two options cover most of this job with nothing extra to install, and ChatGPT is the one most readers already have open. Use it as an AI flashcard maker first, then decide whether you want the cards in a spaced-repetition app.

ChatGPT (study mode). OpenAI describes study mode as designed to build understanding by asking questions, guiding your thinking and checking understanding rather than only giving a final answer. It lists reviewing class notes and creating practice questions or flashcard-style review among its uses, and says it can reference materials you upload. Study mode is available across ChatGPT plans globally on web, iOS and Android, is not available in Temporary Chats, GPTs or Projects, and follows the same plan, message and rate limits as normal ChatGPT.

Uploading notes works on Free and paid plans. Free users are limited to 3 file uploads per day, and OpenAI notes limits can change and may be lowered at peak times; individual files can be up to 512MB per file. The Free plan includes unlimited text chats with limited messages with uploads; ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, billed monthly. For one lecture or one chapter, the free tier is usually enough — the daily upload cap is what stops you when you batch several subjects in a day. Plans and prices can change, so check the current plan on the tool's site.

Google's notebook tool. Google's help centre, at the notebook path, now calls it Gemini Notebook. It can generate Flashcards or Quizzes from your uploaded sources in the Studio panel, letting you choose easy, medium or hard and adding a prompt to guide the focus. It accepts PDF, Word, text, Markdown, CSV and PowerPoint files; each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB, with up to 50 sources for Free users. Google referring to Free users means there is a no-cost way in, though check Google's site for current plans.

Where the cards end up. If you study in Anki, it can import plain text files whose fields are separated by commas, semicolons or tabs, as long as the file is plain text in UTF-8. If you use Quizlet, you can paste imported text with terms and definitions separated by a comma, tab or dash and rows separated by a semicolon or new line, with each row becoming a card; Quizlet also says its AI-powered study guide feature generates questions and answers from longer blocks of notes. Either way, ask for tab-separated output and you can paste in seconds.

How far AI gets you

Level: AI does it. Both tools return finished flashcards and quiz questions directly from files you upload, with difficulty and focus controls, so you never write a card yourself. What they cannot decide is which of those facts your exam or course actually rewards — that judgement is yours.

What you still do

  • Verify against your own notes before you study from them. OpenAI says ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading outputs, including fabricated quotes or citations, and advises verifying important information. Google gives a similar warning for its assistant, saying it may produce inaccurate information and can hallucinate. Cards turn a wrong answer into something you memorise, so check numbers, dates, lists and quotations at the source.
  • Follow your school's rules. OpenAI warns that study mode can make mistakes, and says for graded work you should follow the AI-use policies of your school, instructor or organisation. If the policy is unclear, ask the instructor before the due date rather than after.
  • Decide what should stay private. If the notes are unpublished course material, you can stop new chats training OpenAI models by turning off Improve the model for everyone under Settings > Data controls; the chats still remain in your history. Temporary chats are not used to improve models, but study mode is not available in Temporary Chats — you choose one or the other.
  • Use official or licensed sources for anything that counts outside study. For money, tax, insurance, health, legal status or a professional licence, check the official source or a qualified professional instead of relying on AI output.

Do I need a paid plan to make cards from my notes?

Usually not. ChatGPT Free allows 3 file uploads per day, and Gemini Notebook allows up to 50 sources for Free users. Paid tiers mainly raise limits — ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month billed monthly, and Go is OpenAI's low-cost tier with higher limits than Free for file uploads, though OpenAI did not render the Go price on its pricing page when checked. Can ChatGPT flashcards go straight into Anki or Quizlet?

Yes, if they are formatted for it. Ask for tab-separated plain text and the output matches what Anki imports and what Quizlet's paste-and-import accepts; both approaches are documented in their own help centres, linked above.

What if a card contradicts my notes?

Treat the card as wrong and the note as right. Paste the offending line back to the tool with "quote the exact sentence in my notes that supports this answer" — if it cannot produce one, delete the card and rewrite it from your notes yourself.
